WHAT IS NEUROPSYCHOLOGY?

According to the American Academy of Clinical Neuropsychology, clinical neuropsychology is an applied science that examines the impact of both normal and abnormal brain functioning on a broad range of cognitive, emotional, and behavioral functions. Neuropsychological evaluations include standardized tests and procedures that assess cognitive, behavioral, and psychological functioning in the context of environmental and physiological contributions to functional challenges or disability, health, and wellness.

WHAT DO NEUROPSYCHOLOGICAL EVALUATIONS PROVIDE?

The neuropsychological evaluation can provide a deep understanding about: intellectual ability, academic skills, thinking skills such as memory, attention, language, visual-processing, and executive functions (e.g., reasoning, problem solving, planning, organizing), emotions (e.g., depression, anxiety, fear), Behaviors (traits, habits, etc.), adaptive capacities, Personality and social skills and factors impacting interactions with others, and motor and sensory functions (e.g., ability to control large and fine motor movements; taste, vision, hearing, smell).

WHAT IS NEUROPSYCHOLOGICAL REHABILITATION?

Neuropsychological rehabilitation aims to improve cognitive, behavioral, emotional, and psychosocial difficulties caused by an injury to or changes in brain. Neuropsychological rehabilitation involves a goal-directed and measurement informed approach to identify and select goals to be achieved in treatment in a partnership of survivors of acquired or traumatic brain injury, their families, and other treatment providers. Cognition, emotion, and psychosocial functioning are interlinked, and an integrative approach to addressing health and wellness will be targeted during neuropsychological rehabilitation.

WHAT IS FORENSIC PSYCHOLOGY/NEUROPSYCHOLOGY?

Forensic neuropsychological targets services for individuals needing cognitive and psychological assessment within a legal context, often involving court cases, evaluations, and expert testimony. A forensic neuropsychological examination is performed by a neuropsychologist who is hired as an independent contractor by a third party, such as an attorney, insurance company, or the court to make a determination regarding psychological, neuropsychological, or neurobehavioral functioning.
